(12/10/2009)
Join the National Media Museum in Bradford for the family fun animated weekends in October and get ‘drawn in’ to the array of exciting activities the Museum has to offer this October half term. With the Museum opening a new animation exhibition and screening an array of animated films, there won’t be a shortage of opportunities to get creative this October. During October the Museum is also taking part in The Big Draw, an annual event that invites everyone to get drawing, so there are lots of exciting events planned for all the family.
Kick start your October and help the Museum play its part in the Big Draw by dropping into the family workshops taking place every weekend throughout the month.
On Saturday 17 October join the Museum in celebrating the launch of its new exhibition, Drawings that move: The Art of Joanna Quinn with a unique chance to draw on the Museum’s glass front! Join Museum staff and Joanna Quinn from 2pm on Saturday 17 October and create your own work of art on the front of the Museum using OHP coloured pens.
Joanna is a British animator with a witty take on life that’s also reflected in her work. Joanna is known for her larger than life animated characters including the no-nonsense Welsh housewife Beryl, the Charmin Bears from the television adverts and the wild rock ‘n’ roll cat Famous Fred. The exhibition of her work opens in the Museum’s Gallery Two on 16 October.
There are also a variety of ‘hands on’ workshops taking place in and around the Museum on 17 October. Join professional film makers and learn how to create movie memories in the Home Movie Day session (10.30am – 3.00pm, £3 per person) or join Oscar-nominated Joanna Quinn and learn how to animate drawings in the Drawings that Move workshop (10:30am -12.30pm. £3 per person).
This half-term get your pencils ready for the big drawing and animation half term workshops and don’t forget to say hello to Wallace and Gromit in the Museum’s permanent gallery all about animation. Embark on an adventure around the Museum’s new exhibition Drawings that Move: The Art of Joanna Quinn or watch animated family classic films like Famous Fred and The Snowman. Blast off into space in IMAX with the Fly Me to the Moon, the first ever animated 3D film created for IMAX.
The Museum is giving families the chance to work together this half-term with free drop-in sessions so put your pens and pencils to paper and start drawing, discover animation techniques and create your own flick book. Join the Museum every afternoon during half term and lend a hand in creating the biggest drawing possible that will be displayed on the walls in the families space on the fifth floor on the Museum for all to see.
Family workshops (£3 per person, all 10.30am – 12.30pm, booking essential) include Drawing with Light workshop (27 October) where visitors can come along and explore how to draw with light and create their own photograms whilst experimenting with this exciting process. Youngsters with an eye for photography are invited to attend the Printed Portraits session (28 October) to create their own family portrait using a variety of printing techniques. There is also a chance to learn how to bring drawings to life with the Mini Moving Drawings workshop (29 October).
Amuse yourself during October half-term weekends with Family Film Fundays where all tickets cost £1 to a range of classic animated delights. Showing on 24 and 25 October are The Snowman (11am) and Joanna Quinn’s animated tale Famous Fred (1pm). Both films will be followed by a showreel of animation made for children and by children which has been shortlisted for the Bradford Animation Festival (11-14 November). For Halloween, the family film is Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (PG), showing at 1pm on 31 October and 1 November.
This October half term prepare for lift off in IMAX with Fly Me to the Moon, the first ever animated 3D film created for IMAX. The National Media Museum is the only venue in Yorkshire where cinema-goers can watch films on a screen as tall as four double-decker buses for a BIGGER and BETTER cinema experience. Also showing in IMAX during October half term is Space Station 3D and Dinosaurs Alive 3D.
Don’t forget to visit the Museum’s eye-popping permanent galleries. Stop off at the Animation Gallery and say hello to the world’s favourite cheeky animated characters Wallace and Gromit or venture through the colourful Magic Factory and discover how light behaves through the interactive exhibits.
To help squeeze in an extra day of animated fun this October half term the National Media Museum will also open its doors on Monday 26th October.
